In modern mechanical engineering, parts that are not related to bodies of rotation, such as housings, frames, boxes, racks, etc., are widely used, and machining centers (OTS) are used for their mechanical processing. Based on the analysis of the methods of orientation of workpieces in the working area of milling centers, the article proposes an approach to the formation of the WCS (Work Coordinate System) part coordinate system, as well as determining the composition of the mounting and clamping elements of devices to ensure the accuracy of the structural elements of the original non-circular parts in serial machine-building production, allowing to formalize the procedures of design basing. The use of algorithm theory, design automation, and information technology has made it possible to implement these procedures as a decision support system. The use of the system makes it possible to reduce the time required for the formation and design of technological processes for manufacturing parts, improve the quality of design solutions for the selection (development) of machine tools, which makes it possible to increase the productivity of machine engineers and reduce the number of errors at the stage of technology implementation. The developments can be used: in the technological bureaus of machine building enterprises to design the manufacturing operations of parts at milling processing centers; in IT companies to improve CAPP/CAM/CAFD systems; in the educational process to train specialists in the field of mechanical engineering technology.
